The Aureus uses a process called photopolymerisation using resin to create its 3D
waxes. In layman’s terms, this means that it grows the 3D model from a liquid bath
of resin. After the models are created they need to be after-cured using special
lamps which emit intense light radiation to harden them.
The advantages of this machine are:
- The machine can produce all models including those with intricate hollow parts.
- The machine can produce many models at once.
- It has low noise and heat pollution.
- Maintenance costs are generally low because there are few moving parts.
- There is little wastage as unused resin remains in the bath to be reused.
- The models can be filed down.

The disadvantages are as follows:
- The models need to be cast under special conditions, that are not provided by all
casting firms.
- The models cannot be soldered.
- The after-curing process is arduous involving lots of different stages and it is
also very smelly.
- The cleaning products used in the after-curing process need to be disposed of professionally.
- The bulbs in the special lamps are extremely costly to replace.
- The models need to be solid without any naked edges.

The disadvantages are as follows:
- The wax models produced need to be cleaned up to eradicate the layers of wax showing
on the surfaces.
- The wax used is different to that used for wax carving by hand. It is not favoured
by casting firms due to its brittle nature. It is also therefore difficult to file
down.
- It has high noise and heat pollution.
- The after-curing process is not difficult, but it is smelly and produces heat.
- The oil used in the after-curing process is toxic and needs to be disposed of professionally.
- The models need to be solid without any naked edges.
- Maintenance costs can be significant because there are many moving parts and therefore
more potential breakages.
- The wax deteriorates over time, if stored.
- There is wastage of holding material.

The Solidscape T76PLUS rapid prototyping machine works by building up the 3D model
by printing very thin layers of wax one on top of another. There is then an after-curing
process using a hot bath of oil to separate the wax model from the holding material.
The advantages of this machine over other machines are:
- The machine can produce all models including
those with intricate hollow parts. - The machine can produce many models at once.
- The machine is the most popular in the jewellery market.
- The wax models can be soldered.
